So after watching the recent GOP debate I decided to do a little research about Ben Carson’s views on same-sex marriage and why he has those views. Then I decided to compare Ben Carson’s views to Bernie Sanders’ views and why he has those views.
Ben Carson believes that marriage is sacred and should only be between a man and a women. I do not entirely agree with him, but I can see where he is coming from. The moral foundation that he is using to support his beliefs is the Purity moral. This moral is pretty self-explanatory, pretty much it is keeping things pure and how they have been for years. To Ben Carson marriage is pure, it is meant to be between a man and a women, he believes that same-sex marriage is impure and sullies the idea of what marriage is supposed to be.
Bernie Sanders on the other hand is all for same-sex marriage and other LGBT rights. He is running under the fairness equality. Bernie Sanders believes that LGBT people should have the same rights as anyone else. He does not believe it is right for them to be discriminated simply because of what they are.
These are two very different points of views and this is because they are based off of two completely different moral foundations. One is based off of the idea of purity while the other is based off of fairness. This is understandable but here is what I want to know, is there a way for these two foundations to co-exist with LGBT rights?
