So yesterday, I had the opportunity to watch the Democratic Debate, and I have to say that it was much less chaotic than the Republican Debate. First off, they were loads more civil to each other. I didn’t hear nearly as much verbal bashing towards each other compared to the Republican debate where it seemed as if that’s all the republicans wanted to do. Instead, the democrats talked more about the actual topics, and rebutting each other’s ideas about the topic and not the person themselves.
Quick recap about the topics in each debate. In the Republican Debate the main topics were about; Donald Trump’s ability to run the country, the business records of both Trump and Fiorina, foreign policy (specifically the Iran deal and Syrian civil war), immigration, religious freedom and same-sex marriage, and drugs (specifically the legalization of marijuana). The Democratic Debate mainly talked about; Hilary Clinton’s wishy-washy stances on many different issues, incarceration, gun control, Russia and Syria, taxes, social security, college tuition, Clinton’s emails (again), and climate change (briefly).
I am kind of disappointed that the Democrats and Republicans weren’t asked the exact same questions, I would’ve liked to compare the two parties and their stances on the same issues. It gets hard to compare the different candidates and parties when they are talking about completely different topics that they believe are important.
I really enjoyed how both Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley brought up how they both believe that climate change is the largest threat to this nation. I completely agree. A lot of people don’t believe that climate change is a huge issue but I am glad that there a few people running who do believe so. However, I wish they would have had more time to explain why they believe it is so important.
All in all, I enjoyed this debate way more than the Republican Debate, they were harder on content and softer on people, it didn’t turn into a huge shouting match about everybody’s eligibility or effectiveness as a president, and they brought up many topics that more Americans can relate to.
