TRAVEL SKIT
For this project we were given the task to create our own skit in groups of 4-5. Each group was given a specific category of vocabulary words (restaurant, airport, around town, etc.) that needed to be used in the skit. My group’s vocabulary was focused on things you would find in a typical town. We chose Madrid, Spain as our town and chose actual places in Madrid for our cultural references. After writing the first draft of our skit we performed it (in English) in front of our peers for critique. Some of the critique we got from them was that it was confusing to understand where exactly we were in Madrid since it was in another language. To resolve this, we created a slideshow that explained where we were during the skit along with interesting facts about each place. Once we finalized our skit we then had to memorize our personal lines. I did this by reading the person’s lines who were just before me then reciting my line that came next. Then, my group practiced acting everything out, figuring out what kinds of props would make the skit easier to understand, and how we would walk and show we were traveling to different places in Madrid.
From this project I have learned that it is really necessary to speak slowly and enunciate words that people may not understand right away since we were talking in a different language. I also learned that words are not the only tool at hand when talking in a language where you don’t always understand everything, by using different actions and motions for different words your message can still be understood.
