So last night’s debate was quite…interesting, or infuriating depending who you are. For me it was quite infuriating, not just because they did not know how to actually answer the questions (they would fail at my school) and loved talking over each other. No, it was mainly infuriating because they were throwing around words acting as if they were actual facts even though they were either half-truths or complete lies. Thanks to this amazing website, I was able to do some fact checking on the things they were talking about, mainly the things that seemed quite outrages or didn’t sound quite right….
The one fact that I absolutely knew was false beforehand was the “fact” that claimed that vaccines caused autism. This was infuriating because when they asked Dr. Ben Carson who is a pediatric neurosurgeon, he clearly stated that there was no correlation between the two. Even after hearing this from an actual doctor who gave some evidence, Donald Trump still claimed that vaccines caused autism and that autism is now an epidemic. It doesn’t work that way… Epidemics are caused by things like viruses, bacterial diseases, and fungi who are spread from person to person as infections. Autism however, is an abnormality of the brain in either the structure or how it functions. There are no clear causes to autism however there is evidence linking it to genetics, viral infections (which vaccines help prevent), metabolic imbalances, and exposure to chemicals.
This was one of the many “facts” that were not actually true. I really hope that everyone will fact check before believing whatever is said but there was no evidence to support it when said.
